Free Security Software Smackdown

Your Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 computer can now be protected by an amazing array of free security software products. There are so many classes of internet security software that it is unlikely that you have even thought of all of them. By careful research and selection you will be able to provide security protection for your Windows XP system that will rival or exceed the purchased products.

INTERNET SECURITY AS A ‘TRIANGLE’
It is important to understand that there is a wide variation in the quality and overall performance of free internet security software downloads for Windows XP, Vista or other Windows based systems. Only consider well tested and reviewed free security software products as potential contenders. You certainly should be hesitant to install a piece of free security software that has not been widely reviewed or is unlikely to already be installed on thousands of computers, your computer and its data are too important to rely on unproven software.Be very careful because nonfunctional security software may leave no signs that you have little or no protection of your valuable data! A malfunctioning game may be obvious to spot but a malfunctioning firewall or antivirus program may not in any way let you know that your defenses are down. If internet security software such as a free firewall or free antivirus software is downloaded to your system and fails to work, you may not have any idea until long after your computer has been compromised. This certainly is a risk that few of us can afford to take.

Thinking of a triangle when talking the topic of internet security is often makes the concept easier to understand. Each of the points represents one of the three primary classes of internet security software. The groups that are most important are: antispyware, firewall and antivirus. Other types of security software and hybrid programs would be found in the center of the triangle. This triangle of security concept may be a little over simplified when you consider some of the new expensive combination products, but it is still a helpful way to examine the basics. To make this discussion easier to understand I will stick to this idea of three distinct classes of internet security software. There are dozens of great free security products that meet the qualifications for each area of this triangle. We will be looking at a few of the best security software downloads.

FREE ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE DOWNLOADS
The selection of reliable free antivirus software downloads is really quite amazing.Of all antivirus products available for download, Comodo is certainly my favorite free option and bests many paid choices. Comodo is involved in the high end enterprise portion of the internet and decided a couple of years ago to provide an antivirus product free to give everyone a safer online experience. Almost a year ago Comodo created a security suite from their free antivirus and firewall products. The free Internet Security product from Comodo does an excellent job of dealing with viruses on individual computers and even network situations, it can actually proactively find new threats by using advanced heuristic analysis in real-time. Host intrusion is used by Comodo Internet Security to boost your protection by stopping malware before it has a chance to start running. Comodo is automatically updated with virus definition files every day. In addition to Comodo Internet Security, PC Tools Antivirus Free Edition is a top performing but little publicized free antivirus workhorse. Two other products from PC Tools are better known, Spyware Doctor and Registry Mechanic. PC Tools Antivirus differs from Comodo in that it adds live support and more frequent and faster virus updates. The free antivirus product from PC Tools is updated frequently and actually protects in real time. Deep virus scanning power is a key feature of PC Tools Antivirus Free Edition to allow you to be confident of your virus protection. Both of these security favorites work will under Windows XP and Windows Vista.

FREE FIREWALL SOFTWARE DOWNLOADS
For some unknown reason a number of popular free internet firewalls are no longer available. Fortunately the best two continue to be available. Zone Alarm Free Edition has been picked year after year by many users as the best single purpose free firewall. Many users have picked this as the #1 firewall for many years running. The popularity and wide use of ZoneAlarm has made it the best understood and most reviewed free internet security firewall. Even with these comments I can say that ZoneAlarm is not my first choice for free firewall. Comodo Firewall which is part of the free Comodo Internet Security suite is probably the best firewall you can find. Zone Alarm retail products differ from the basic free version in that they have some advanced features to give an added level of protection.Comodo Firewall although free has the best features and functionality of ANY available firewall. In numerous firewall comparison tests Comodo was picked as the number one firewall software. With the blend of firewall and antivirus products the free Comodo Internet Security suite is a winning product.

FREE ANTISPYWARE SOFTWARE DOWNLOADS
There are quite a few great free antispyware software downloads available for your Windows computer. Unlike antivirus and firewall products, you can usually use more than one antispyware product to protect your Windows system. We have tried a variety of antispyware programs and currently have our three favorites running at the same time: Windows Defender, Spyware Terminator and Spybot Search and Destroy. These three products have been performing together for over a year with no loss of performance, crashes or other problems.

Your computer will remain free from threats if you pick a software choice from all three areas of the triangle. Having dealt with the key three areas of security software, you next can work with some of the less critical but still important products such as antispamware for your Windows system.

Windows 7: Strong Security?

Microsoft claims that Windows 7 is the safest operating system it has ever built. Is this a mere puff or is there some substance to the claim? In fact there are some strong security features incorporated into Windows 7 which can make a big difference.

1. The core kernel of the Windows 7 operating system has been enhanced and strengthened. Specifically two techniques, Space Layer Randomisation and Data Execution Prevention are very effective at preventing virus attacks at a low level and result in a stronger computing environment.

2. User Account Control (UAC) is the security feature that was born in Vista and has come of age in Windows 7. In vista these nagging UAC pop-ups were tiresome but they did help in the battle against malware. In Windows 7 a slider control allows you to contol the level of protection for access to files and therefore the user can strike their own balance of security versus useability.

3. Windows 7 incorporates Internet Explorer version 8. Quite simply, this is a more secure and faster browser than its predecessor and has a host of new features improving privacy and protecting against phishing and other malware attacks.

4. Managing security features & settings has become far simpler with Windows 7. Out goes Windows Security Center and welcome to the new Windows ‘Action Center’. This displays lots of information regarding the status of various security components at a glance: firewall, antispyware status, and virus protection. It also keeps you up to date on the status of Windows Updates, Internet security settings, & User Account Control settings.

Windows 7 brings with it a number of welcome security enhancements. Its certainly more secure ‘out of the box’ than any of its predecessors & this is a good thing. These improvements come at a time of increasing security threats online and will be welcomed by computer users.

6 Steps To A Faster PC

Here are six simple steps which, if followed, will result in faster peformance and a more secure computing environment.

1. If you have never used keyboard shortcuts, now is the time to try. These can save you lots of time and extra mouse movement! Take Windows + M for example. This simple shortcut minimises all open windows in one quick sequence. Imagine how long it would take to click minimise on each of ten open windows. Windows + E open Windows Explorer directly. Windows + L locks your computer if you need to leave your desk.

2. Another repetative timewaster in Windows is the delete confirmation message. It is one of the most annoying and unnecessary prompts you will encounter. In the course of an average computing month you will have told Windows hundreds of times that yes, you really do want to delete that file! To switch off this nag, right click on the Recycle Bin and untick the option to display the delete confirmation dialog.

3. Run Windows defragmenter at regular intervals to keep hard disk performance in good shape. The defragmenter does this by physically organizing the contents of the disk to store the pieces of each file close together on the hard drive. This results in noticably faster performance. Do a defrag once a month, or better still schedule this task (you can do this if you’re using Vista).

4.Update Windows regularly. Computer hackers are constantly finding new ways to attack your computer with viruses & other malware. Microsoft continually searches for security vulnerabilities in their software and provides security updates to fix them. The security fixes are available, but computer users don’t get them installed quickly enough. Head into your Control Panel & turn on Automatic Updates right away. An added advantage of activating Automatic Updates is that Microsoft provides other software updates that make your computer run better and faster. For example, an update may fix an issue with a hardware device, improve the performance of your computer, or deliver improved functionality.

5. Create good passwords for all of the User Accounts on your computer. Many users choose to leave accounts wide open with no passwords. Even worse, is the Administrators account which exists by default on all Windows XP & Vista machines. This account gives total access to your computer system, and in most cases has never been password protected. Remedy this immediately by creating a fresh set of passwords for all of your accounts. Remember to use a mix of letters and numbers and throw in a couple of uppercase letters for good measure.

6. Install strong Antivirus Software. Do some research to satisfy yourself as to an effective antivirus software as some programs are decidedly mediocre. A good antivirus will form the mainstay of your computer’s security while on the internet. You can increase your security further with strong antispyware protection. A few years ago you might have got away with neglecting this issue, but certainly not today. Weak security will be quickly exploited by the latest rogues, trojans and rootkits.

Take these simple steps onboard and both you and your computer will be much happier tech travellers!
